The cultural program for the 2017 symposium of the Asian Confederation of Weatherpersons (ACW) concluded on Sunday with the traditional Meteorologists versus Talent T20 cricket match.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Meteorologists performed well in the morning session and amassed a formidable total of 2 (declared) for 448, with Ray Wilkie top scorer on an unbeaten 249 off 60 deliveries. Jenny Woodward was the best of the bowlers with figures of 1/109 from her four overs.
The Talent top-order initially proved very resilient. Openers Grant Denyer and Steven Jacobs piled on some useful runs until they entered into a mid-pitch disagreement over the existence of a short single that would have given Denyer a half-century. Denyer was run-out and Jacobs was forced to retire hurt. He was later treated at Cairns Base Hospital for suspected willow-strike.
With the openers gone, Romeo Aguirre was brought into the attack. He penetrated first-drop Vanessa O’Hanlon’s inadequate defences before running through Sami Lukis, Lavinia Nixon and Sam Wallace with his relentless charm and off-spin. Livio Regano was an entertainingly foppish, but ultimately temporary presence at the crease.
The Talent bottom order then collapsed under a completely unforecast tropical downpour and were all out for 112.
The next conference will be held in October 2018 in Sana’a, with registrations open in January. The pitch is expected to be a real turner.
