Cuarón scoops the Steves

By Shirley Higgins-Croft.

All of the stars turned out last night in Cairns for the sixth North Queensland Academy Awards, sponsored by the Villa Romana, Cadbury and Montezumas. Hosted by Lucy Lawless, the four hour ceremony included a performance of Radio Ga Ga, by Rami Malek, backed by Brian May and Roger Taylor.

Malek was favourite to take out an acting award for his fine performance in Bohemian Rhapsody but, in a huge surprise, Kevin Sorbo snagged the Best Overacting award for his compelling role as Winston Mills in Bernie the Dolphin 2.

The enigmatic Alfonso Cuarón picked up the Best Picture and Best Mexican film Steves for Roma. In his emotional acceptance speech (above), he articulated his love of North Queensland, which he referred to as his ‘spiritual home.’ It is understood that Señor Cuarón may be looking to relocate to the region and is in negotiations with Netflix to produce a ten-episode remake of BMX Bandits, set in Mount Surprise.

The Gay Men’s Choir of Whitfield closed the evening with an impassive rendition of Seth McFarlane’s award-show standard “We Saw Your Boobs”, with updated lyrics based on the iCloud photo leaks in 2014.
